Time's Most Influential

The 2011 TIME 100 list of the most influential people in the world is out, and as The New Yorker points out, there are, sadly, only 4 writers on the list.

Some new-ish notes about some of our member writers:

Member Alexandra Horowitz's Inside of a Dog: What Dogs, See, Smell and Know is one of the most popular selling books on college campuses.

Member Jonathan Franzen has been nominated for a National Book Critic Circle Award for his bestselling Freedom.

Member Dan Cryer's first book, Being Alive and Having to Die, a biography of Forrest Church, has been purchased by St. Martin's Press. The book will be published in the Fall. {via Publishers Lunch}

Kristin Davis will star in a television treatment of member Gretchen Rubin's The Happiness Project.

The Most Literary Rent Party Ever on Feb 6

The writer Charles Bock (Beautiful Children) has some great friends. On February 6 at PS 122, a number of them will get together to throw the Most Literary Rent Party Ever to benefit Bock's wife Diana Colbert, who has leukemia.

Tickets go on sale today for the party, where you can help the cause and meet many of Bock's writer friends such as (NYSL members) Jonathan Franzen and Susan Cheever, Joshua Ferris, Mary-Beth Hughes, Nicole Krauss, Gary Shteyngart, Rick Moody, Richard Price, Mary Gaitskill and many others. Forget the Super Bowl - the Giants won't be there - and this sounds more up our alley anyway. Send me an email if you're going...

100 Notable Books

The New York Times has posted a list of the 100 Notable Books of 2010. Congratulations to all the authors, but especially to those on the list who are associated with our Library in some way:


David Goodwillie told me he wrote part of his novel American Subversive here at the Library...Member Jonathan Franzen's on the list for Freedom and Stacy Schiff for Cleopatra.


Member Barnet Schecter's George Washington's America: A Biography Through his Maps was hailed as one of the best coffee table books of the year. Barnet will discuss his book at an event at the Library next week.
