Thomas Fleming's 1st book - 50 years later

Member Thomas Fleming published his first book Now We Are Enemies in 1960. The story of Bunker Hill was the first on this historic event in over 85 years, and the book became a main selection of the Literary Guild and was subsequently condensed in Reader's Digest. Not a bad start to a writing career!

50 years later, Now We Are Enemies is being reissued by American History Press today, June 17, the anniversary of the battle of Bunker Hill.

Since that first book, Thomas Fleming has gone on to cement his reputation as a stellar writer and historian of the American Revolution. Just last year, he published his 33rd book, The Intimate Lives of the Founding Fathers, which was a main selection of the History Book Club and was named the best book of 2009 by the American Revolution Roundtable.

After having the lamb burger at the Breslin or Lidia's spicy calamaretti at Del Posto, one might feel moved to express oneself in iambic pentameter. The folks at Alimentum, the literary magazine that's all about food, are here to help. Celebrate Poetry Month by downloading the Menupoems placemat printed with a dozen poems. Then read one of the poems on video at your favorite restaurant and upload it to Alimentum's YouTube channel.

...and the Menupoems editor is none other than our own Library member (and Fiction Group II leader) Esther Cohen.

Two members, One publication

The Drawbridge is a quarterly UK publication with articles around a theme (Memory, Silence, Horror, you get it) and with an impressive roster of contributors: Umberto Eco, Jose Saramago, JG Ballard, Isabel Allende, Mario Vargas Llosa.

So it happens that not one but two Library members are contributors for the Winter 2009 issue. I had just finished reading a great article by Tracy Quan about falling in love with A.A. Milne after discovering Chloe Marr, and blaming the New York Society Library in the process (ok, so our collection is just too good to resist). Then I went on to discover an equally absorbing article by member Gini Alhadeff about first love.
